JANUARY EVENT PLOTTING

EVENT PLOTTING #1: JAN 2024
Part I; Chapter 2. Silence tells me secretly everything

Welcome to the first event plotting post, neighbor! This event will be posted on January 5, 2024 in [community profile] silentspringlogs.

universe/setting information, role assignment, and FAQs

A thought is haunting me

Just in time for New Year's Eve, the town square that held a magnificently decorated 15-foot Christmas tree last week now has a glittering silver ball to rival New York's own waiting atop a flagpole rooted in the same spot. Strings of lanterns illuminate the snowy brick courtyard, lined with stands offering hot cocoa, ciders, and various warm snacks, or perhaps characters are more interested in obtaining a pair or two of silly New Year's glasses that allow them to look through the numerals 1961. Eventually, though, all goes quiet for the exciting countdown.

'Five... four... three... two... one!

The ball drops, and confetti streams down onto the square (and the people standing in it!) as the Sweetwater High School Marching Band picks up a jaunty rendition of the New Year's classic Auld Lang Syne—but characters will likely find themselves distracted by the dark spots that appear in their fields of vision, gradually expanding until everything is eclipsed entirely by soft blackness. They feel less and less of the world around their bodies, numbness starting at their fingertips and toes and creeping up their extremities until they feel touchless, floating, completely absent of sensation. Then something replaces it: fragments, or perhaps all of what follows.
The world flashes black, then returns, hazy and doubled, half obscured by smoke as you lie face down on the hard, rocky earth. One ear shrieks, a whine that grows higher and higher. Hot blood streams down the other earlobe and drips onto your neck, washing off sweat and grime as it trickles toward your collar. Pain slices through what you think must be your eardrum like a jackknife shoved into your skull. You cough, throat burning, ribs protesting the movement. A coppery taste, a warmth, fills your mouth. You check with your tongue and all of your teeth are there; the blood is coming from your broken lip. The hair on top of your head feels hot and wet. You know your cheek is scraped open from the gritty sting taking up most of your face.

The doubled image of a medic gets into your face, his lips silently moving. You try to shake your head, to communicate that you can’t hear him over the shriek of your own tinnitus, but your neck is too stiff. Your brain slams against your skull and your head feels like it’s been hit with a brick. Blood drips off of your brow and into your eye.

The medic squeezes your shoulder and pushes off, scrambling across the debris until he disappears in the gray-brown smoke. There’s a moment of irrational fear: he’s leaving you here to die. You’re hit somewhere and you’re last in triage. You’ve heard about soldiers not feeling the gunshot until much later. When he and his buddy come back with a stretcher, surprise mingles with the dread of being lifted.

You shut your eyes tightly, trying to recalibrate your vision, but it still swims with the pitch and yaw of the rocky earth beneath you. When you open it, he’s trying to look into your eyes, hand on your shoulders, his lips finally moving in a pattern you recognize: Going home. Going home.

Going home.

You close your eyes.

*

You stare at a long tawny finger as you wind it into the red plasticized cord of the phone set, doing nothing when it begins to throb against its tethers, the single physical sensation anchoring you in reality.

“Listen to me. I need you to be calm and handle this. Someone will be there in thirty minutes, Ron. You need to keep it under control until then or we’re going to be in a world of shit you can’t even imagine—Put up roadblocks. Say a convict got loose. I don’t care. Do what you have to. Don’t call me unless it’s resolved or someone’s fucking dying, Ron, do you understand me?”

*

The door opens as the emergency light comes on, flickering. The room fills with the suffocating stench of diesel. A candystriper’s golden-brown hands wrap around your thin wrists, pulling you as she rocks back on the heels of her wet tennis shoes with all of her might. Tears stream down her cheeks, strands of relaxed hair hanging in her eyes. She chokes her words out around sobs of her own, eyes wild with terror, screaming: Miss Ruby, you have to get up! You have to get up, Miss Ruby! But your legs won't move. Your breaths shudder ragged in the air just like the volunteer's.
At 12:01, characters return to consciousness: but there are little changes, twinges that make this a bit realer than a dream. Perhaps their index finger twinges as blood returns to it and the impressions a tight phone cord left on their skin fade, or maybe they find themselves wiping a few droplets of blood from the corner of their jaw. Perhaps their ears ring, gradually giving way to clearer sound—or maybe they awake sitting on the ground with their arms around their bent knees, face wet with tears, overcome with a raw panic unlike anything they’ve ever felt. How very odd.

Notes:
—Characters can experience all of the memories, or players can pick and choose.
—Characters do not have to be in the square to receive the memories.
CWs: nonconsensual memshare/receiving of memories, flashbacks to combat zone and injury, blood, hearing loss/burst eardrum, panic attacks.

In the Valley of the Dolls we sleep

'New year, new you!' the cheery saleswoman on the radio and television ads for the local two-story department store proclaims ad-nauseam, becoming more and more of a regular guest in characters' homes as time marches on toward the 15th of the New Year. There are great sales to be had, and would you look at that, characters have a few gift cards to this very store in their respective purses and wallets! Over time, the voice of the young woman in the advertisement almost seems to grow more insistent, even though the same ad plays every time: surely it's just familiarity altering one's perception of her voice, right?

On the morning of the 13th, characters wake up to the sound of every radio and television set in the house turned on and blaring the ad. The saleswoman reminds them that time's running out, and that the sales will only last for another 48 hours before they're gone. If characters can't hear, they only make it as far as the living room before the television screen comes into view, the same message scrolling across the bottom of the screen in large close-captioning... even if they haven't turned it on. This time, something feels different, and characters find themselves compelled as though by a supernatural force to go check out the sales being advertised.

Characters may notice once they're inside of the building that it's only new arrivals here: the townspeople of Sweetwater seem to have already done their shopping! Fortunately, there are still some great items left. It may be when looking at that cashmere sweater or a nice pair of snowshoes that characters catch a tiny flicker of movement out of the corner of their eye: but when they turn in that direction, there's nothing except a faint, nagging sense that something's not right. It happens again as they pass through the store—and then, with no warning, the faceless, eyeless mannequins throughout the store burst into motion at the same time as the sales associates collapse to the floor unconscious, attacking characters with inhuman strength and whatever items they have at their disposal with the intent of bludgeoning them to death.

If characters try to escape from the way they came, they will find that the automatic doors and fire doors are all locked as though from the outside. The windows cannot be opened or broken, nor can the glass of the doors—they're trapped here. Really, truly trapped.

To make matters worse, the mannequins, unlike the salesman, seem truly impervious to... everything. Guns can pierce them, but they have no blood to lose or brain to damage. They can be dismembered, but they're strong, and hard to pull apart; even if a mannequin's head is removed, the body will still function. Characters have one advantage, however: the mannequins are not as intelligent as human beings, and seem to mostly lack object permanence. If characters can stay silent and out of sight after finding somewhere to hide, the mannequins will drop their pursuit after about fifteen minutes of trying to get to them.

The mannequins stay alive for 48 hours, and the doors stay locked for the same amount of time. Characters who do not find a way to sleep risk sleep deprivation symptoms similar to the ones detailed in the explanation of modes of torture in Sweetwater, and will be slower, weaker, and less able to fight off or escape from the mannequins. 48 hours is also a very long time to go without water, which can only be obtained from the sinks in the bathrooms... both of which feature nicely dressed mannequins in one corner.

Notes:
— Deaf characters and characters who wear earplugs to bed will be awoken by their spouse moving, or will randomly wake up even though they can't hear the ad.
— Players who wish to opt out can say that their character simply slept through it and woke up after the doors to the department store had already locked.
— This prompt will have an interaction opportunity: characters may try to investigate at the risk of leaving cover. If a character is able to get close enough to the service desk on the second floor, they may also notice that one of the customer service associates, a teenage girl, lies slumped over the counter as opposed to on the floor with her coworkers, an unlabeled, recently installed button depressed beneath her shoulder—she was leaning forward before she lost consciousness. If her body is moved, the button stays anchored in place. If characters check it again, hours later, they'll notice that it can't be depressed or lifted, but seems a little higher—almost as if it takes a set amount of time to return to resting.
CWs: violence, entrapment, hypnosis, living mannequins, dismemberment.

Drill it in like J. Paul Getty

Should characters discuss the horrors of the month on the network, over the telephone, or in places where townspeople can hear, they’ll face the consequences. They go to bed the night of the offense as usual—and come into consciousness in a dark room, a basement of some sort, bound to a chair with leather restraints buckled onto their wrists, their ankles. A leather strap runs across their chest, holding it to the back of the hard wooden chair they’re bound to. A few feet away, the static electricity of a television box provides some measure of light as noisy waves ripple across the screen.

Upon further examination, there’s one more thing on characters’ left wrists, directly north of the leather straps holding it to the armrest: a set of electrodes and thin wires that run down and across the room.

“You’re awake. Good morning.” None other than the town’s private practice doctor, Norman Pollock, greets them, with the same matter of fact tone he’d use during a standard physical exam. “You seem to have lost sight of what makes Sweetwater so special, so we’re going to watch some videos, get your head on straight. We can’t have this kind of subversive behavior when the country’s already under attack, Sweetheart.”

He presses a button on the television remote—which characters might notice has a second, less refined one taped to its side—and a program comes on: What Communism Will Take From Us.

For the next 36 hours, the hour-long video plays on repeat, showing idyllic scenes right out of a Norman Rockwell painting, detailing the joys of the American way of life, emphasizing all of the ways subversive thoughts and actions undermine it, and how they hold the door open for the Red Menace. This is what’s at stake, what little towns like Sweetwater, Maryland have to use. Norman sits in a chair nearby, smoking cigarettes, reading issues of the New England Journal of Medicine, the remote never leaving his hand. The moment characters’ eyes close for longer than a single blink, the electrodes on their wrist deliver a nasty shock to help them wake up, growing in intensity with every additional offense. His never do for longer than a regular old blink.

By the end of the 36 hours, characters can expect reality to begin to blur at the edges, and may be experiencing auditory hallucinations, paranoia, and their minds wandering in ways they haven’t before. At 36 hours of sleep deprivation, the body cries out for it, desperate to rest. Maybe they erupt into hysterical laughter, or weep uncontrollably, or panic. Norman is unphased by all of it.

If characters try to fight back, or prove too argumentative and unwilling to learn, Norman will produce a glass syringe and draw up a thick fluid from a dark glass bottle, which, if characters have the necessary visual acuity to see, reads haloperidol. He jams the needle into their gluteus and injects; within 10 minutes, characters will feel very, very sedate, almost catatonic in their stupor. Effects vary from person to person, but it is not a pleasant experience: in addition to the deadness it brings on, hearts race and mouths go dry. It gets harder to swallow, or maybe a character’s vision begins to blur. The limbs contract in fits and jerks in the immediate and for the week the drug lasts. The face twitches uncontrollably, muscles ache in their rigid stiffness, and it becomes hard to stay upright throughout the week as the drug interferes with the character’s balance, making them dizzy and confused.

THE TOE TAG
If characters fight Norman, however, they may find that he backs against the nearby metal filing cabinet–knocking loose a piece of paper hanging from a half-open drawer when he does. It’s recognizable as a photocopy of a toe tag, the kind affixed to corpses in a morgue, but characters have seconds before their vision doubles and blurs too much for it to remain readable. Characters who are injected with haloperidol for subversion, either for talking about the murder or a different offense, may comment to the event post under the designated mod comment to take a shot at reading the tag. Remember, though, it’s probably best not to advertise that they saw anything out of the ordinary, or to even mention what happened to them, on a publicly visible communications channel…

They wake up in their own bed shortly after losing consciousness, and spend the next week corpselike.
CWs: torture, non-fatal electrical shock, restraints, medical/psychiatric abuse, nonconsensual drug administration, altered states of consciousness, needles/injections, gaslighting, brainwashing, sleep deprivation torture, antipsychotics overdose, smoking.

It's freezing and I am watching you shovel snow

It's a cold winter for Maryland, characters will hear their neighbors complain, and within a few days of the New Year they have reason enough to complain too: the snowstorm everyone's been talking about in the neighborhood clubs comes on the 7th of January, dumping a foot and a half of snow. Better grab that snow shovel, or find someone to help you if you can't! A snowstorm like this takes multiple visits outdoors to keep up with, so maybe now would be a good time to practice divvying up responsibilities with characters' new spouses or children—or for bachelors to seek out the help of a neighbor. Characters may also have to deal with a power outage lasting up to 14 hours—better visit a house that has power if they need anything, but at least this is the kind of experience that brings a parent and child or a new couple or even two members of the same community closer. At least in theory.

It’s not all near-death experiences, psychological torture, and power outages, though! Characters who find themselves in need of some R&R will be pleased to know that the local fire department has tested the municipal park’s pond and found the ice is now suitably thick for ice skating. Characters will find lace-up leather ice skates in their size hanging from their tied-together laces in the garage, though this probably isn’t the best way to learn to skate if they haven’t before, given the lack of rail to hold on to–unless they have a friend to help them balance?

Will dismembered mannequin body parts still operate independently, or are they inert? Can they be reattached by the mannequins or are they just abandoned? Can we use stolen legs as weapons

Q! Is there (aside from network posts or exclaiming about death mannequins in public) a good way to judge if a conversation or just actions outside of talking about events would/has flagged a character for, ahem, Intervention? I like the idea of will-it-matter/who’s listening hovering (at least IC) even when trying to be stealthy but obviously you can’t monitor all interactions.

Would trying to make conversation with Norman (making eye contact instead of looking at the screen, talking at him over the sounds of the TV) count as "argumentative" for the purposes of getting drugged?

Potentially silly question that may be answered by the event log so feel free to disregard if so—

Would it possible to get a general rundown of what departments are in the department store? I'm guessing the usual apparel/toys/misc homegoods, but I'm wondering if there's any outdoorsy equipment or basic hand tool sets (like wrenches etc, not saws... as funny as that would be) that can be scrounged.

(If the answer is 'Use your best judgment' and you don't actually care about getting this granular, that's cool too.)

I had asked on plurk whether we are limited to choosing one memory in the first prompt, and we are not. We can do as many as we want. Just putting this here in case anyone else had the same question.

Just planning post-NYE activities - will everything be open business as usual on New Year's Day itself? Like the mall, library, grocer, clinic, restaurants/cafes etc.

Character Name: James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes
Character Age: 106 but looks late 30s~early 40s
Character Role: Husband/Father
Canon: MCU/FatWS
Canonpoint: post-FatWS
1 paragraph summary of character/canon: James Buchanan Barnes (also known as Bucky) from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Disney+ series the Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The canon is much like real life, except with a lot of fantastical things happening (alien invasions, gods and celestial beings, killer robots, timey wimey alternate timelines and universes, magical stuff, superheroes and villains etc.) Bucky was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1918 and enlisted for WWII as a young man. In the mid-1940s he was captured by the Nazi-resembling organisation Hydra, successfully experimented upon with a supersoldier serum as a prisoner of war, and survived a fatal fall where he lost his left arm. Presumed dead and left behind, he was fitted with a replacement bionic arm, brainwashed and reprogrammed as a blank slate murdery tool for Hydra, lifespan artificially prolonged using cryogenetic technology until his childhood friend rescued him. He's been trying to do the right thing but also having bouts of recovering/drifting/relapsing/struggling ever since then.

event plans
A Thought is Haunting Me: OH MY GOD the first memory is going to be so triggering for Bucky and I will definitely have a top level for this prompt. I don't think he actually wants to talk about what he saw/felt (unless someone else talks about it first, then he will engage intensely) but when he comes to at 12:01am there may be a Violent Reaction, Furious Note-Taking or some other maladaptive defence mechanism set off by this.

EDIT: I gave it a bit more thought and I think I will have a side prompt top level for this for Bucky to try and figure out whose memory that was, or who the medic is. He'll fixate on the flashback and try to remember if he saw dog tags on himself, or look through some old newspapers or records in the library or local VA or wherever to see if he can get any information. He will also help investigate the other two flashbacks if he's given any names or descriptions, or maybe they can pour through records together.
In The Valley of the Dolls We Sleep: Iiiii am probably not going to do a top level for this one but happy to tag into someone else's top level and punch mannequins all day, get their asses handed to them and/or go off on a sleep-deprived hallucination bender.
Drill It In Like J. Paul Getty: I don't know if I like this event prompt more or the first one. But I think there will be more interactions with Norman and less with other townsfolk? Not sure how to play out this one with other characters yet. He will definitely get a glimpse of the toe tag but learn from his first mistake and not talk about it. And just get a whole lot more guarded/paranoid about his neighbours, whether they're NPCs or PCs.
...And I Am Watching You Shovel Snow: I will do a tiny top level for this one in case anyone wants for their character to offer to help shovel snow or sit in the dark and cold for a night but honestly, I'm more interested in the noncon memshare and Clockwork Orange prompts. Totally understand these prompts are Really Intense though and maybe you wanna start off with something gentler/lighter! Or they can always sit in the dark and talk about their experiences with the first three prompts, that would be good too, but he might struggle to say anything because he doesn't trust anyone anymore and doesn't want to go back to The Chair.

A Thought is Haunting Me: Because I'm nice I'm going to have Arthur's first flash of vision in this game be some horrible torture memory! Probably the panic attack one because he'll be able to recover the easiest from it.
In The Valley of the Dolls We Sleep: This one Arthur actually has some experience in! Being hunted by horrible monsters he can't see!! He'll actually be quite capable, defending himself reasonably well and managing to keep quiet, and will completely forget to tend to his bodily functions. He's going to react very poorly to someone that tries to help him in silence, because he can't fucking see, and that reaction will almost definitely draw something's attention. Good luck with him, help him find a window they can smash open to escape.
Drill It In Like J. Paul Getty: Arthur will definitely try discussing the events of the past two prompts with other players, but I don't know if that would be enough to count as active subterfuge? I don't think he'll be doing anything to get caught this early.
...And I Am Watching You Shovel Snow: Arthur is definitely not going to ice skate, when there's too much risk of hurting himself, but he'll do his best to try shovelling. More than happy to have one of the other families come over to help Helly deal with his blind ass being trapped in a room.

Character Age: 23
Character Role: Husband
Canon: Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Canonpoint: The end of Part IV, Chapter IV — he has met Sonya and his mother and sister have moved to Saint Petersburg, but he has not yet confessed his crime.
1 paragraph summary of character/canon: Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov is an antisocial, irritable, and incredibly proud impoverished former student living in Saint Petersburg during the early 1860s. After a month of internal debate over his character and nature, he decides to murder and rob a pawnbroker who he has previously had dealings with, both out of a need for money and so that he can prove to himself that he is an “extraordinary man”. While he is successful in the murder, the pawnbroker’s innocent sister finds him at the scene of the crime, and in a moment of panic he kills her as well. After becoming violently ill with stress and guilt, he meets a young prostitute named Sonya, whose drunkard father he’d been acquainted with. As the authorities begin to close in on him, Sonya encourages him to confess to the crime and repent for his wrongdoing as he wrestles with the meaning of guilt and his place in the world.

event plans
A Thought is Haunting Me: He probably won’t be attending the New Year’s Eve celebration in the town square unless someone drags him there, but he’s still going to be dealing with the brain bashing! He’s going to spend quite a bit of time thinking he’s lost his mind unless someone tells him they dealt with the same thing. Depending on who he’s talking to about it, he absolutely might go on a research binge to try and figure out whose memories he saw, and he’s going to spend a lot of time thinking about it. I’m not entirely sure if I’ll be writing a starter for this prompt, but I’ll definitely be tagging all of yall’s!
In The Valley of the Dolls We Sleep: Ahaha oh boy. Raskolnikov is not going to be sleeping during this whole escapade, please and thanks. He isn’t a fighter, either — he’s probably going to be hiding out somewhere and just Suffering. He might be persuaded to go on a water run once the dehydration starts to kick in, though. He’s also likely to try to comfort anyone who’s feeling particularly panicked, especially those who are younger than him. Or he might just lie down and be useless…that’s also an option.
Drill It In Like J. Paul Getty: Uh-huh yup this is his time to shine(??). There is a very good chance that Raskolnikov is going to end up getting propaganda’d, and if so, a near 100% chance that he’s going to be too much of a stubborn mule to listen to reason. Haloperidol here we come! Afterwards, he’s going to be stumbling, zombie-like, around the town…feel free to come up to him and ask him what the hell he’s doing.
...And I Am Watching You Shovel Snow: Raskolnikov, being from Russia, is used to moderate amounts of snow, but a foot and a half is a lot for him. (The player, on the other hand, scoffs at this snowfall. Anything under three and a half feet is a moderate amount of snow!) He’s pretty acclimated to the cold and damp, but hasn’t ever really shoveled snow before, so this is a learning experience! Power outages, though? Hah! Raskolnikov laughs in the face of power outages! He’s very used to living in the cold and dark, and in the fits of generosity he occasionally experiences, will actually be helping anyone who needs advice or assistance!

character info
Character Name: Vasiliy Yegorovich Ardankin
Character Age: 33
Character Role: Husband
Canon: Original
Canonpoint: 2018, 1 year after immigration to the US
1 paragraph summary of character/canon: Vasiliy’s a Soviet ex-interrogator, fervent communist, and revenant–born in 1910, he served in Nikolai Yezhov’s NKVD from 1936-1940 as a ‘good cop’ interrogator responsible for emotional manipulation in the distinctly Soviet split style interrogation system: instead of beating confessions out of prisoners, Vasiliy approached them casually and with kindness, expressing sympathy and emphasizing that it was in their best interest (and their family’s) for them to sign the falsified confessions that would ultimately get them jailed or shot outright, justifying it to himself with the belief they’d be tortured until that happened anyway. When Yezhov fell from Stalin’s favor and was jailed and executed, the NKVD was purged just as it had been during Vasiliy’s time, and he was arrested, interrogated, and executed as an enemy of the state. But his story didn’t end there–for reasons that aren’t clear to him, Vasiliy woke up lying on his back in the snow in the middle of nowhere in 2015, unharmed, carrying the documents of a man by the same name born in 1985. He’s spent the past three years unlearning Stalinism and coming to grips with the sheer magnitude of what he did, racked with overwhelming guilt and deep paranoia over being discovered and executed for what he did a second time. He trained as an EMT and immigrated to the US on a work visa two years after his return to the world of the living, and has spent the past year working with Chicago municipal EMS in an unconscious effort to balance some of the cosmic harm he did while processing how he was summarily disposed of and living in fear of rediscovery, still a true believer in communism but now living in an environment in which traits that helped him survive in a police state are seen as deeply unusual.

event plans
A Thought is Haunting Me: Vasiliy's definitely going to be hanging out before the actual ball drop, so possibly a chance to mingle here. The New Year is an important Soviet holiday and is the closest thing he has to Christmas, so even if there isn't a yolka like the tree he will be insisting stays up in the house until New Year's Day, he's still going to partake in festivities. He's going to see only the memory of the man on the phone and be super suspicious and paranoid about it beyond his basic level of those two emotions, so he isn't likely to actually share that he saw anything. I'm definitely down to have him approach characters with trauma that gets awakened by what seeps into their minds and try to offer some comfort.
In The Valley of the Dolls We Sleep: Super excited for this one! Vasiliy's going to try to use his gun and then be horrified when it literally doesn't work because they're plastic. His instinct is going to be to team up with people and try to find somewhere to hide, but the issue with Vasiliy is that he's the type to want to intervene in crisis situations and has now been conditioned to do so as an EMT - so it's entirely within the realm of possibility that he may go back out into danger to help other characters. Down for all of the mannequin-fightingfleeing threads, and possibly him getting injured by one of them or him helping someone else who gets injured by one of them.
Drill It In Like J. Paul Getty: Vasiliy definitely knows not to say a single peep about what he saw, so he won't be getting tortured/dosed or seeing any toe tags. Definitely would like to have him briefly encounter someone who's under the influence of the haloperidol injection either handwaved or threaded, or maybe to find out that someone was tortured - because finding out that there's a basement where people are tortured is going to really, really fuck him up on account of having worked in a basement where people were tortured.
...And I Am Watching You Shovel Snow: He's an altruistic person, he works out, and he's your guy. Vasiliy can be expected to offer neighbors help with their driveways or other snow-related tasks, although he's not really the type to participate in snowball fights or building snowmen. He does, however, love to ice skate, and is pretty good at it - being that there aren't rails to hold onto at a natural pond, characters are welcomed to hold his hands to help stabilize themselves! He's 5'7 and slim, so the amount of balance he can offer taller/broader people is a little less, but it's the thought that counts!

Character Name: Sokka
Character Age: 15
Character Role: Child
Canon: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Canonpoint: Post-S3E11, "The Day of the Black Sun Part 2: The Eclipse"
1 paragraph summary of character/canon: Avatar is a cartoon set in a universe where some people can manipulate one of the elements through "bending." The story is about the discovery of the one person who is capable of manipulating all four elements after he's been missing for 100 years, and his journey to end a war and return balance to the world. Sokka is fifteen-years-old and a non-bender, meaning he has no special abilities, though he learns throughout the series that he adds value to the team in other ways (planning, strategy/tactics, creativity, and more conventional fighting). He's from a tribal culture and considers himself a warrior. Throughout much of the series, he's largely the one who keeps the Avatar & friends moving forward on a schedule and focused on the mission at hand. He's an intelligent character, though he can be pretty goofy at times, but he grapples with his self-worth, guilt, and pessimism. Always the first one to throw himself into battle, Sokka would sacrifice himself for his family and friends in a heartbeat.

event plans
A Thought is Haunting Me: Sokka will be wandering around before the event, if anyone wants a general thread before hand! I am leaning toward the candystripper memory, as it has elements that will be a little personal for him, but once he recovers, he'll be wandering around, helping out as needed and/or asking vague questions.

In The Valley of the Dolls We Sleep: Sokka is going to try fighting the mannequins with his boomerang at first, and when that doesn't work and he figures out that it's possible to hide from them/make them forget about him, he'll try to share that info with anyone who needs it. He will also try to explore and get water, and he's likely to suggest sleeping in shifts if he teams up with your character. If your character needs help, he can assist with warding off the mannequins. If your character wants to protect him because he's a child, I'm totally up for that, though he might not be too enthused if your character tries to convince him to hide instead of being proactive.

Drill It In Like J. Paul Getty: Sokka is trying to be cautious and I don't foresee him using the network freely, so I don't think there will be cause for him to get in trouble (yet), but if anyone wants to thread out the aftermath of their character being punished, I'm up for it. If your character is walking around suffering side effects, he will offer to help (and will likely also ask questions).

...And I Am Watching You Shovel Snow: As someone who grew up in the South Pole and hasn't been back in months, Sokka is going to be glad to see snow. If your character isn't into shoveling or needs some help, he could give them a hand. He'd be pretty good to have around in the event of a power outage, too. Barring that, he'll probably hang around the ice skating area, reminisce about ice fishing/hunting and being back home, and just in general spend a lot of time outdoors.

Other: If anyone wants non-event threads, I'm open to those as well!

Options!

Valley of the Dolls: Sans would probably want to stick near Sokka in the spirit of "I know this kid and he has a boomerang to hit things with". He is definitely going to suggest the whole hiding thing though, sorry Sokka.

Watching You Shovel Snow: Sans and Sokka are buddies in having lived in places where there's snow all the time! Though Sans is not used to having a human body that is so susceptible to cold, that's a little unfortunate. He'll still also be hanging around the ice skating rink! Maybe make a snow lump. Sokka can admire it, for a certain definition of admire.

Character Name: Maureen Robinson "Park"
Character Age: 48
Character Role: Wife
Canon: Lost in Space (2018)
Canonpoint: End of Season 1, S1E10.
1 paragraph summary of character/canon: Maureen Robinson is a, quote unquote, "scary smart" aerospace engineer turned space explorer-slash-survivalist from the not so distant future. She and her family—three kids, one estranged-recently-reconciled husband—were part of a colony group bound for a distant planet when disaster struck, and their shuttle crash landed on an unknown planet. While Maureen didn't set out to get...lost in space..., she's wasn't exactly an unwilling adventurer either. Quick witted and ravenously curious about the universe at her fingertips, Maureen thrives under pressure and she thrills at a challenge. She loves reason, and lists, and math, and clever solutions to complicated problems that are trying very hard to kill you. It just so happens that she also expects everyone else to similarly flourish in the same circumstances; living up to those expectations is a sure fire way to earn her respect and affection. Crumpling under them is a great way to lose it.

event plans
A Thought is Haunting Me: Maureen is going to be attending the New Years festivities in the hope that one of her family members will show up. I'm tentatively going to be giving her both the first and last memories, and would be jazzed to have an immediate aftermath thread or two, and/or some conspiracy theorizing in the days that follow.
In The Valley of the Dolls We Sleep: Planning to top-level here. Lets MacGyver our way to the service desk, or use someone competent as bait to lead the mannequins out of the restrooms while someone else collects water.
Drill It In Like J. Paul Getty: I'm going to hold off on comitting to this until I see how the above/below go. My inclination is yes, Maureen is going to end up facing some consequences for being less than subtle (she's just not used to living under surveillance), but I'd rather see how this plays out organically.
...And I Am Watching You Shovel Snow: Might do a small top-level for this, but mostly planning to tag out and around. Maureen's going to be in problem solving mode and is unlikely to indulge in the more relaxing extra-circulars unless they're a cover story for pressing neighbors for info.
NOTE: I'm very much a 'Fly by the seat of my pants' type RPer and tend not to do a lot of up-front plotting, so these are short and sweet. If you want a bespoke starter or something in the setting that isn't directly tied into the event prompts, hit me up and we can get something going.

I'd also like to register my interest in some kind of aftermath thread if Maureen does get herself tortured, and if it sounds good to you I'm leaning toward making them deal with a power outage since 1. Jupe's never had to deal with snow and 2. the initial loss of power will probably send him into a short-lived panic thanks to [redacted].

Character Name: Beth Greene Nashton
Character Age: 18
Character Role: Wife
Canon: The Walking Dead
Canonpoint: End of episode 05x08, "Coda"
1 paragraph summary of character/canon: Beth Greene is an 18-year-old girl whose life went from "normal" to "zombie apocalypse" two years ago. Since the turn, as she calls it, she and her family - which has swelled from parents and siblings to include unrelated but beloved survivors better known as the cast of The Walking Dead - have struggled to survive, first in her family's farmhouse, and then in an abandoned prison. In that time, she's grown up fast: she's been the primary caretaker of an infant, lost both of her parents in violent conflicts, and nearly died herself on several occasions. Most recently, she's been an indentured servant at a hospital where brutality reigns. Beth's become harder since the beginning of the end, but she's also managed to hold onto a notion of faith and the need to do good, no matter the cost. She's brave, loving, and willing to kill - and she's coming in with enough mistrust that she just might feel she has to.
“Family” members: Edward Nashton, husband

event plans
A Thought is Haunting Me: Even if she's not jazzed about anything happening in this town, Beth likes holidays - so she comes out, and she is FREEZING, but this is also the first time she's had hot chocolate in years. And when she gets back from the dreams, she might be having a panic attack. New and different for her. Touch her at your peril.
In The Valley of the Dolls We Sleep: It's also been a while since she's gone shopping, but she's kind of excited - aside from the fact that this is The Time Of The Girdle, lol. Once in there, though, this is going to be zombies on overdrive for her. I'd love to handwave her having met a neighbor and maybe been kind of closed-off but otherwise generally normal (or we actually do that bit, if you feel up for it!), and then in the department store, we're back to "time to stab bodies in the head" mode. Also interested in a quest for water. Anything for Evening Primrose: Murder Edition, man. I love this.
Drill It In Like J. Paul Getty: Whether this becomes relevant is going to depend on how various threads go - Beth's willingness to be A Real Pain In The Ass is situational, and it could genuinely go either way here. She's in a volatile place
...And I Am Watching You Shovel Snow: Look, she is from Georgia. This is new to her - and not only is she not into it, it's lowkey implied that it was hot out around her last days alive. Even with a week or two to adjust to the winter weather, it's still a shock.

So on the one hand, she's a hard worker and can function with minimal power/technology; on the other hand, she's far more familiar with extreme weather in the form of heat. Writing anything related to the weather is of interest, whether getting caught in it or trying to figure out what to do when the heat goes out, etc.

(And maybe one snowball fight, skate around the pond, or snowman-building experience, as a treat. This is the most snow she's ever seen in one place, and even in the middle of horrible things, Beth knows how to find the good - sometimes.)

I love the idea of Papyrus panicking a little about the aggressive and strong mannequins when all his combat reflexes are about magic or wrestling, and then Beth barrelling in with highly relevant experience in fighting things that don't stay down.

And given the timing of things, they might first meet during the snowstorm? Which he'd be mostly thriving in, and happy to give advice on how best to shovel and clear stuff out. Sets up a nice back and forth possibility of aid.

Canon: Undertale
Canonpoint: Ruler Papyrus ending, genocide run derailed by sparing Papyrus
1 paragraph summary of character/canon: I'm gonna rewrite this thing every time until I'm happy with it lol.
Undertale is a videogame based in an alternate Earth, where monsters and humans once lived together in peace - until the humans declared war, demolished the monster population, and trapped the survivors under a mountain behind a magical barrier. PAPYRUS is a skeleton monster, more loud-spoken and quirky than your average random encounter skeleton foe in a cave, who speaks and writes in the font he's named for (alongside his brother sans). Fueled by fears of loneliness and irrelevance, Papyrus sought importance by becoming a sentry and trying to gain a position with the Royal Guard - by capturing a human for the king to take their soul for the power, if need be! Unfortunately for him, his dramatic monologues and puzzle presentations may have won the murderous human over into accepting his mercy, but didn't convince them to stop killing overall. I'm specifically taking him from the ending where he and (to a significant extent) his brother have been ruling the kingdom of monsters after the deaths of all the other likely leaders, where he had been prioritizing the morale issues while his brother primarily handled the logistics. He hasn't yet realized that his brother remembers events differently, much less the specifics of their differences.

event plans (reorganized for in-game chronology)
A Thought is Haunting Me: (Jan 1st) Papyrus will be at the New Years, socializing before the drop and a little desperate to talk after the fact, in-person or via network. He'll try hedging the new memories with sentiments like "wow, I thought New Years dreams were about... having your own dreams, for the future! Not dreaming weird random dreams that belong to other people," but otherwise won't do great at keeping secret the fact that something happened unless shushed by whoever he's talking with.

Drill It In Like J. Paul Getty: (Jan 3rd..?) Pending word from mod to see how bad a time he'll have down there, but he's going to have a time. I want him to have an extra motivation for trying to blend in / be more deliberate about subverting the rules, and tossing him in here is a great way. Please feel free to have your characters encounter him around his yard afterwards, though his brother will be trying to make him stay over at the Doe household while he recovers from whatever happens.

...And I Am Watching You Shovel Snow: (Jan 7th) Snow! Finally, this unasked-for home away from home feels homey. Except for the ways that skin is incredibly sensitive to cold. He'll be out and about shoveling, making an oddly skeletal snowman, and generally complaining about how many layers he needs to wear. Consider it an opening to other conversations in a low-stakes situation!

In The Valley of the Dolls We Sleep: (Jan 13th-15th) I haven't yet decided what Papyrus's approach in here will be, because his reflexes would be to use magic, and that's not on the table. Maybe coordinating with others to try getting the bathroom mannequins into a get-along sweater? (to pin their arms in place, and haul them elsewhere)

Wildcard I am also very much down for meetings with other scenarios, like the various non-event hooks mentioned in my ooc intro!

Player name: Mel
Player pronouns: she/her

character info
Character Name: Sans
Character Age: 30
Character Role: Father (single, not ready to mingle)
Canon: Undertale
Canonpoint: failed genocide; the player loses to Sans and does not reload or reset
1 paragraph summary of character/canon: Undertale is a video game where a human falls into the Underground, a world of monsters, and has to get through it to escape. On top of that, saving, loading, and resetting are actual concepts, and Undertale being a video game is a very big part of its canon; because the human can never permanently die, it leads to questions of how to behave with that kind of power. It turns out the monsters are actually pretty chill people, and you can get through the entire game without killing anyone! But you can also go wildly out of your way to murder literally every monster in the game and get a very different experience, which is where I'm bringing Sans from: he's from the path where every monster is killed and he has to fight the human. Sans is a lazy skeleton who loves his brother, good times, bad food, and worse jokes. He's a sentry in at least three different stations, one of which is an illegal hot dog stand, and he plays at comic relief almost the entire time... Except in the genocide route, which is where Sans happens to be from. There, from the point the human kills Sans's brother onward, he stalks the human through the Underground and fights them as the final boss (in the Judgment Hall, fittingly), because he actually knew all along that the human had the ability to reload and reset, and he knows that if the human finishes murdering every monster, all the timelines will end forever. As a result, Sans's humor is much darker, he's much angrier, much lonelier, and much more depressed... But he's still that funny skeleton, and the funny skeleton is all he wants people to see.
“Family” members: Sokka (assigned son)
(and also Papyrus is his Actual Brother)

event plans
A Thought is Haunting Me: Sans will be hanging around the New Year's party very intent on watching a new year happen. I'm going to give him the first memory, but Sans isn't going to want to talk about it in public. If you need someone to shush your character, he can do that! He'll be happy to (well, happy's a strong word, but he'll want to) talk about these memories in private and compare notes.

In The Valley of the Dolls We Sleep: Sans is getting stuck in the department store. He's not a (physical, or ideally any type of) fighter, so he's going to be dodging and hiding. He'll be trying to find/hanging out with Sokka, who is capable of fighting, but he's still going to be advising not getting in any more fights than necessary and trying to approach things from a more secretive angle. If you need someone to try and come up with a plan for getting water by maybe accessing the plumbing pipes rather than getting in a tiny room with some mannequins, Sans is your guy. But you're going to have to actually do it, probably.

Drill It In Like J. Paul Getty: Sans's secretive nature keeps him safe here, but it doesn't keep his brother Papyrus safe, and so Sans will be on edge and very aware of this and actively trying to find others it happened to. Subtly, of course. He's up for casually leading drugged people into a house before he asks them about what happened and how.

...And I Am Watching You Shovel Snow: Sans likes snow! He's not used to actually getting cold, that's weird, but he'll get over it. Expect to see him around the skating rink, maybe making a snow lump or two. Sans will absolutely not be shoveling his driveway he doesn't even drive the car.

Wildcard: If you have something else in mind, run it by me!

character info
Character Name: Margaret Houlihan
Character Age: Early 30s
Character Role: Wife
Canon: M*A*S*H (TV)
Canonpoint: Right before the finale
1 paragraph summary of character/canon: M*A*S*H is a sitcom/drama about the people in a US mobile army surgical hospital (or M*A*S*H) unit during the Korean War. In the show, Major Margaret Houlihan is the chief nurse of the M*A*S*H 4077. Margaret grew up in the army, and as a result, has absorbed the idea of discipline. authority, and order being above all. Although she can sometimes come off as a major hardass, she has a softer side, too–she cares deeply about her patients and her cohorts at the M*A*S*H unit. She’s passionate about her beliefs, unwilling to take any sort of mistreatment from her fellow officers–and she certainly isn’t afraid to pull rank.
“Family” members: Vasiliy ([personal profile] m1895)

event plans
A Thought is Haunting Me: Margaret will be attending the New Years Eve celebration, which means that before the Horrible Memory Share, she will be around to mingle and gather more information following The Memories!
In The Valley of the Dolls We Sleep: So Margaret isn’t exactly a combatant, but she still knows stuff about, say, creating a defensive position and also helping those that are injured from the mannequins. She can try and help others with first aid and will probably make an attempt to take charge in some way…whether or not she’s able to garner people’s trust is another thing.
Drill It In Like J. Paul Getty: Margaret will do her best to keep mum about the whole Situation, but definitely would be interested in interacting with people who Have faced the consequences and be horrified at the whole Implication of the town trying to keep quiet about everything happening!
...And I Am Watching You Shovel Snow: methinks this will be mostly limited to interactions with Vasiliy but let me know if you want Margaret to help excavate your character!

character info
Character Name: Norton Folgate
Character Age: 30ish
Character Role: Bachelor (confirmed for now, until more women are apped)
Canon: Torchwood: Soho
Canonpoint: After The Black Knight
1 paragraph summary of character/canon: Torchwood Soho is an audio play spin-off of Torchwood, which itself was a spin-off of Doctor Who. Torchwood is an organization founded by Queen Victoria to protect the British Empire from alien threats. Norton Folgate is a Torchwood agent in the 1950s. He is also very gay. As the series progresses, it delves into the tension involved in Norton working with a government that would seek to throw him in jail for his sexuality. He's cynical, manipulative, and very ruthless, although he often presents himself as rather silly and harmless. A lot of his mannerisms come from his participation in 1950s London gay subculture. (Rather effeminate, use of Polari slang, a lot of things that later on got exaggerated into The Gay Stereotype.) Although he's careful to just toe the line to not get himself arrested, he's not remotely closeted, which results in social stigma that has made him rather suspicious and hardhearted.
“Family” members: None so far.

event plans
A Thought is Haunting Me: Norton loves a good party so he'll definitely go to the New Years Even drop. I'm thinking of giving him the memory of the phone call? But still thinking about it.
In The Valley of the Dolls We Sleep: Definitely going to jump into this one. And Norton will definitely think they are Autons at first. This is the kind of horrible that he's fairly accustomed to facing.
Drill It In Like J. Paul Getty: On the fence about this one. On the one hand, Norton is fairly paranoid and practiced at being very aware of Who Might Be Listening. But also at this point he's not aware that talking about strange things isn't allowed, so he could get dragged in purely because he didn't know he was violating a rule. (And electrocution for behavior modification is a thing that's terrifying to him, so he'd be profusely apologizing for whatever he did wrong and swearing to never do it again as soon as he feels an electrode on his skin.)
...And I Am Watching You Shovel Snow: I'd love it if Norton could have a massive power outage and go stay in another house for a bit to develop some CR since he's family-less at this point.

Character Name: Edward Nashton
Character Age: 38

Canon: The Batman
Canonpoint: End of film.
1 paragraph summary of character/canon: Sad maladjusted orphan takes inspiration from another sad maladjusted orphan and decides his miserable life and (admittedly considerable) wasted talents are the fault of decades-long city-wide conspiracy, then proceeds to carry out some very gimmicky serial killings about it in the name of Justice and Truth. It goes swimmingly, his livestreams really take off, and then right at the last moment this incredible friendship with Batman was entirely his own projection. He's considerably miffed about it.
“Family” members: Beth Greene, wife
Links: TBA.......I'm slow and still recovering post-holiday, profuse apologies

event plans
A Thought is Haunting Me: Edward will be seizing this as an excellent people-watching opportunity and be bitten in the ass in the form of memory two

— He's going to want to test if they're witnessing current events, which means a nice road trip around town checking for road blocks and listening to see if there's anything mentioned on the radio if anyone around might be cajoled into joining him!
— He will of course be available for pre-shitshow conversations, this is as good a place to catch him staring people/things down as any.

In The Valley of the Dolls We Sleep: Uh oh!!!

— The compelled feeling will definitely convince him this isn't something he wants to undertake alone, it is entirely plausible he'll just follow someone in if anyone wants an easy in for Survival cr in the form of happening to be near-murdered right next to each other
— He is emphatically not a fighter, but his default inclination to flee and hide serves him pretty well here! He will be the first person to suggest trying to trick the mannequins into attacking each other / trying to impair their movement > killing them and the last person to volunteer for either of these things!

Drill It In Like J. Paul Getty: Spoiled as he was by conspiracies and guaranteed tech-security back home, Edward is already pretty sketched out by the network and phones and disinclined to use them for anything meatier than discussing the weather.

— Available to pick anyone up in the aftermath, of course, if you want some very awkward care!
— This one is swinging for the fences but it WILL cross his mind to try and follow someone who can reasonably be assumed occupies a spot on the shitlist, up to and including keeping his eyes peeled for anyone that seems foolhardy enough to be talked into doing it intentionally. Potential tough types he could approach + stake out buddies, whaddya say

...And I Am Watching You Shovel Snow: Thanks he fucking hates it!

— He finds nothing charming or fun about the weather but it more or less used to it, will sideeye your joy and wonder as he collapses on his front lawn
— PLEASE help him shovel he's NOT strong his cardio is QUITE shoddy outside of near-death adrenaline. The alternative is he keeps exactly one shovel-width wide path to the car at the tail end of the driveway and prays this doesn't set off the HOA.
— Will not be ice skating but he'll be hovering, as is his tentative goal with any large gathering - basically another shot at mingling, but with much more to potentially talk about re: current goings on! If feelers haven't already been put out about creating some centralized place/means of communication (or if they simply haven't reached him) he may try to nudge people about it.

Shopping mall for a first run-in could be fun, especially since Papyrus will also be incline to fleeing or trickery in his attempts to survive given the whole lack of magic thing going on. Teamwork to try bundling a mannequin up in a heavy jacket like a single person get-along shirt?

Also, please, allow Papyrus to share the joy and wonder of snow, reveling in the crafting of a snow sculpture in between shoveling sidewalks.
...And then his own share of unfun when he starts shivering and sneezing and overall realizing just how susceptible to cold humans can be. But!! Still positive about it!!!!

Character Name: Helly R. (Lester)
Character Age: 30
Character Role: Wife
Canon: Severance
Canonpoint: Post-S1
1 paragraph summary of character/canon: Helly, an employee at Lumon Industries, works in the Macrodata Refinement department, where a surgical procedure called 'severance' has separated her memories between work and personal life. Her access to memories is limited by physical location, preventing her from recalling outside experiences on Lumon's basement floor, or retaining work memories outside the basement. Helly feels effectively trapped at work, wanting to quit but unable to do so due to her outie, the version of her who opted for the procedure and lives a life outside Lumon's walls. Helly hates working at Lumon, and will do literally anything she can to get out – but if her 'outie' quits, the version of Helly that has only known Lumon will cease to exist. This matters little to Helly, who is determined to get out at absolutely any cost.
“Family” members: Married to Arthur Lester ([personal profile] lestercraft)
Links: info · permissions · CR meme

event plans
A Thought is Haunting Me: OKAY SO Helly is definitely chomping at the bit to try to suss this place out as much as possible, so she's likely to go blabbing to find out who else saw these things and try to piece it all together. Further down the line, I'd like for Helly to work on a way for the folks in the town to be able to meet without causing too much suspicion – e.g. under the guise of a recreational club or something – but as for right now with no clear way to communicate, she's probably going to get herself in trouble by asking people in public about this. I'm also happy to thread pre-ball drop things with folks too or maybe just aftermath stuff dealing with the effects of these memories without rousing too much suspicion!
In The Valley of the Dolls We Sleep: I AM UP FOR ALL OF THIS, definitely going to be throwing up an open post of Helly hiding out somewhere and we can draw out some juiciness from this. She will also be in a FLURRY of stress if she gets separated from Arthur because she feels responsible for his safety, so she may well be throwing herself into dangerous situations trying to scout the place out for him.
Drill It In Like J. Paul Getty: I definitely want Helly to get wrapped up in this – she has some experience of sleep deprivation-style torture and will probably instinctively try to come at it from the angle she's used to, which may or may not get her jabbed with haloperidol and enduring some of the side effects. Again, after all this she'll want to talk to as many people as possible about this experience because she has a chronic case of Cannot Learn Her Lesson, so there's definitely space for aftermath discussions of this experience too!
...And I Am Watching You Shovel Snow: ICE SKATING WOULD BE VERY FUN but we shall see if that'll work out with the Everything Else. I'm not ruling it out!

character info
Character Name: Ricky “Jupe” Park
Character Age: 35
Character Role: Husband
Canon: Nope
Canonpoint: After the final Star Lasso Experience.
1 paragraph summary of character/canon:
Nope is a horror movie about—in the broadest sense—the perils of seeing and being seen, and the exploitation inherent in spectatorship. On a more concrete level, it's about a giant flying alien that devours any living creature that looks at it too long. When Jupe, a former child actor who survived a grisly incident where a chimpanzee killed and mutilated several cast members of a sitcom he was on, learns about the alien, he thinks he understands how this works. He thinks if he feeds this voracious looming entity and puts on a show for it, it'll spare or even bond with him. Needless to say, he's wrong, but part of what makes Jupe such a compelling character is his inability to conceive of an alternative. He assumes the alien is a ship and imagines “viewers” aboard it because to him, every relationship is a performance. Almost his entire life has been shaped—warped—by the public eye, and it results in his literally being consumed.

“Family” members: Maureen Robinson, wife
Links: OOC intro Half-assed Permissions

event plans
A Thought is Haunting Me: In general Jupe will be Out and About—since that seems like the point of this! being seen!—participating in seasonally appropriate activities and mingling whenever he can. He will also indulge in moderate goofiness (as befits a sitcom husband) which means: HELL YEAH HE'S WEARING THOSE GLASSES and will also (jokingly) try to make other chars wear them, or at least try them on.

He's also getting hit with a memory (currently leaning toward #3) and will be thoroughly fucked up about it—as much by the numbing sensation that precedes it as the memory itself, because, well. He died 🤙 He's probably gonna shut down or dissociate (and will NOT want to talk about it), so I don't know how much I can offer in the way of engagement, but I'm down for someone attempting to comfort (or question!) him, or following up with him later. Also happy to cap off an otherwise fun/normalish NYE thread with this AHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

In The Valley of the Dolls We Sleep: I'm gonna have Jupe sit this one out, since 48 hours of running and hiding is a lot, and the man's already dealing with SNOW and other people's memories. That said, I'm down to get him peripherally involved—maybe noticing something's up at the store after it's closed and trying (and failing, naturally) to break people out, or potentially seeing a message or something left in a window by an enterprising char and trying to get help, which I'm sure will go great.

I'm ALSO into the idea of him missing the whole thing and someone having to describe it to him afterwards, if that sounds fun/logistically feasible!

Drill It In Like J. Paul Getty: He'll be assimilating like his life depends on it, so Jupe will probably be spared (for now), but I'd love for him to hear about THE TORTURE in some way or another—the creepier the better. Maybe he stumbles across another char in a semi-catatonic state or hears about what's going on third-hand. (Or maybe he comes across a freshly tortured char who doesn't trust him and they put up a fight! Would love that!)

...And I Am Watching You Shovel Snow: He's from California. What is happening.

BUT SERIOUSLY—his power's going to go out and I'm sure Maureen'll be resourceful about it but he'll be sooooo out of his depth. I personally find this hilarious and would be thrilled to play anything from low-stakes “let me show you what an ice scraper is/pretend I didn't just see you slip on ice and fall on your ass” to him sheltering at someone's house. Also a good excuse to poke around HIS house if your char is nosy!

Also: you'd better believe he doesn't know how to skate—at first he'd feel obligated to learn (gotta use those props!!) but ultimately I think he'd find it really fun! If anyone can muster the patience/torture-free time to teach him.
