Cruel, cruel summer
August in Maryland brings with it an insufferable heat in the high 80s that the locals will be quick to remind characters has always been typical for this part of the state. The mosquito man continues to make his rounds to combat the sudden explosion in insect life, and air conditioning units go out here and there, but repairmen are usually easy enough to come by. (Just don’t expect immediate service–a lot of folks have finally decided now’s the time to get A/C installed, you know.) There is no controlled burn on the first of the month, and the weather is perfectly, ruthlessly sunny.
Despite that, early in the afternoon on the second, with seemingly no provocation… the lights go out. Air conditioning units suddenly stop blowing. Ceiling fans slow down until the blades come to a complete halt.
All around town, the power is completely out. There are no fallen branches, no downed power lines. Nothing seems out-of-the-ordinary. As the sun lowers in the sky and generators run out of power, the owners of the supermarket next to the town park wheel out carts with soon-to-begin-melting popsicles as well as ice cream novelties and cartons and hand them out for free - and, mercifully, bags of ice, although that’s not too terribly long for this world, either.
The hospital and fire/police station run on generator after the first day, but nothing else in town does. The heat wave continues, brutal and unrelenting, for two more days.
Living in a movie scene, puking American dreams
Power returns the morning of August the 5th. Televisions crackle to life with a loud buzz of static, and characters will find that the ‘off’ switch on the box simply doesn’t work. The screen stays on, lines of static rolling across the display, and then… a memory. But this time diverges from the last similar incidence of the phenomenon, in which a home video sent from an Indian suburb appeared on the screen. This is a memory that belongs to someone here, someone characters know. Maybe it belongs to another member of their household, or maybe it belongs to one of the non-townies across the street. And, if they ask around, they may just find that their own very personal memories have been screened on a household television set a few houses down from their own.
Could never tell you what happened the day I turned seventeen
Remember the air conditioning outages? Characters who invited the repairman into their house last month or invite him into their house for repairs this month may be greeted by a knock on the front door and a police cruiser parked along their front yard from the 19th to 21st. Over those three days, the police invite themselves into the homes of said player characters, barging in under the guise of a ‘routine safety check’ based on some ‘concerns the neighbors raised’, assuring them that there’s no cause for alarm.
It is a house search.
The members of the household–and any characters who might be visiting at the time the police arrive–are shepherded to the dining room and kept there by one officer as two more methodically go through their drawers, bookshelves, and desks, keeping anything they find that might be considered ‘subversive’ or counter to the general values of the Sweetwater townies with them. Some characters, but not all, may experience brief flashes that feel a bit like fragments of one of the more developed memories that have seeped into their consciousnesses in the past: staring at papers strewn all over the floor and a half-packed suitcase full of unfolded clothes atop them, although the sight is too blurred by tears to make out what the papers say or even what language they’re written in. The feeling of their legs folding underneath them and sinking to the ground, even though they’re seated in a dining room chair. No, a young woman, or maybe a teenager, screams through her tears from another part of the house. No, no, no! Let go of her! No!
None of the police seem to hear anything in the home, although their housemates or PC guests may have the same auditory hallucination. It is possible–not likely, but possible–for especially perceptive characters to notice that the girl’s voice sounds not unlike Marjorie’s. Not identical. Younger, maybe, or a relative. But similar.
If characters are insistent about going to the source of the voice after police tell them that they don’t hear anything, they’ll be stopped by any means necessary, be it physical force or even handcuffing; if they’re particularly emphatic about the existence of the voice, they may find themselves in Norman’s basement the next time they wake up.
When the search concludes, the findings are brought into the dining room and held up for them to see; characters are asked to explain.
Players may choose if the NPC police officers seem to accept their characters’ explanations, or if they escalate. If the police don’t buy the explanation, all members of the household are taken down to the station for ‘further questioning’, i.e., interrogation, and separated into different rooms when they get there.
Chief Clark himself is the one to conduct the ‘conversation’ about ‘what we’ve found here’, with Norman Pollock standing silently behind him and one of the character’s wrists handcuffed to the bar at the center of the interrogation table. If characters resist, they’ll be given injections of sodium pentathol, a depressant that makes further resistance and the mental processes necessary for evading questions very, very difficult. If they continue to attempt to subvert their interrogators, they’ll be given a second injection, at which point they will lose consciousness and wake up strapped into the chair in the basement where Norman conducts Sweetwater bog standard brainwashing/sleep deprivation torture.
- Note that some findings, such as overtly Communist literature, would always lead to arrest.
- Characters who cooperate with the interrogations under the influence of sodium pentathol are returned home when the police are done with them, and aren’t further bothered.

A warmly lit bar. Friendly atmosphere, casual chatter. You're sitting up at the front, casual--it's your usual seat. The bartender is a fire elemental, which is completely unsurprising. More than that, there's monsters all around you--some bipedal dog monsters in armor play poker, there's what might be a rabbit monster or might just be a rabbit's head monster drinking at a booth, there's a bird monster next to you telling the bar as a whole what the bartender--Grillby--is saying. All of this might be strange to the real you, but in the memory, it feels friendly. Safe. Comfortable.
Option Two (cw: injury and death of (what appears to be) a child):
A skeleton and what appears to be a human child stand across from each other in a shining golden hallway. Light shines through stained glass windows. A solemn place. The human looks sick, little shivers wracking their body. Their soul--a red heart, inexplicably visible to you--has a poisoned purple tinge to it. The skeleton appears unharmed, but there's sweat on his ever-smiling skull. The nearest several columns have huge angry gashes taken out of them. There are holes in the tile between the two. The human is covered in dust, holding a knife.
The skeleton speaks--the voice is identical to the one Sans has as a human. Sans speaks. "Well, here goes nothing... Are you ready?" His grin twitches, gets mean. Like he's telling jokes at the end of the world. "Survive THIS, and I'll show you my special attack!"
Sans's voice isn't made for yelling; it sounds like something is straining. But there's no time to analyze it as Sans flings his left arm out and the human, dragged by their soul, slams into walls. They have only a split second to jump before a field of bones cracks up underneath the spot where they just stood. Then into another wall, another field of bones, over and over. Sans flings them down the whole length of the hallway, flashing in and out of existence as he teleports through space to keep up with them. The human brushes against bones and lights up with that poison again, winces as each instant the bones travel through them seems to bring constant, unending pain. They seem to be handling it, like they've seen it before, like they expect what's happening, and then--
they trip, and--
Merciless, Sans grabs them without touching them once more and slams them into the floor. The bones come up. HP ticking down-10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0--
There's a squelch and a crunch. Blood over the tile, over the bones, across Sans's shirt and his face. The soul shatters into infinite pieces.
Sans just stands there. He stands there for a very long time.

wiping out an entire bloodlinebrutallykilling bailey)1 paragraph summary of character/canon: scream is a slasher series, where different killers don a ghostface mask and go on a killing spree. sam is the illegitimate daughter of the original ghostface killer. she struggles with psychosis (she has hallucinations of her dead dad encouraging her to kill people), dark/violent urges and the fact that she actually does like killing people (but she's never killed someone who didn't deserve it). sam wants to be good, she wants to be a good person so bad but it's hard sometimes. she mostly recently had her boyfriend turn out to be a serial killer who was using her to frame her for murder to inspire a movie (in universe the killings have their own horror franchise based on that). a year after that that boyfriend's family have targeted sam and her friends once again wanting to kill them for revenge. as part of their revenge they also set up an online conspiracy theory that sam really was a serial killer which has led to her becoming an infamous public figure with lots of people hating her and assuming the worst about her.

Possible non-event hooks: sam has had her first hallucination of her dad since arriving here, she saw him in a punch bowl at the july 1st party. she's going to be a bit shaken up from that - because well... he kind of has a point maybe the only way to get out of here is to start killing people?? so she's going to be a bit more on edge and you might see her popping pills a bit more.
What are they up to in Sweetwater? up until now sam was really just adjusting since she comes from a world where shit like this just doesn't happen but now that she's having hallucinations again... she's going to start being more active. she wants to go home. really bad.

As children, Wrench and his former partner Numbers were introduced to its boss, a man who would come to be known as Moses Tripoli. It is presumed that both boys grew up with some involvement in the syndicate, where they were trained to kill at the behest of its associates. While stalking Lorne Malvo - a man responsible for the death of one of the syndicate's members - Wrench was wounded by an officer, and his partner Numbers was murdered. Wrench managed to escape and has been on the run for the past decade, evading capture by the US Marshals.

Be gay, do crime? For real, though, Wrench remains kinda fuckin' feral. In canon, he's been almost entirely on his own and evading capture by the US Marshals for damn near a decade. The man has trouble staying inside. And not completely shutting down at the grocery store. And remembering not to fire guns at delicious vermin in the backyard. He could use some good ol' 1960s civilizing.
On a more serious note, trying to figure out what he's "good for" besides, you know, killing people.
What are they up to in Sweetwater?
Mostly losing people left and right, haha. Wrench "lost" the first wife this town assigned him, and while he was still trying to figure out how something like that could happen, he also "lost" his former partner Grady Numbers. (Who had somehow managed to come back to life here in Sweetwater despite being dead in Wrench's current canonpoint.) He's pretty rattled about all of that. He's also managed to get himself into a little trouble trying to help Arthur investigate why no one can leave town of their own volition, and has been sentenced to a bit of community service. Beyond that, Wrench is enrolled in the local community college and studying to do construction.

Oof, being from the upper Midwest means Wrench is way better at winter extremes than the summer ones. He's not going to be very comfortable in this predicament, especially when paired with the absolute bullshit fashion trends he's expected to adhere to in this town. Since he's currently doing a community service kick at one of the local grocery stores I'd love to have him scooping ice cream and handing out popsicles, so please come to see him for all your sweet treat needs. Maybe he'll even volunteer to go door to door and hand the melting stock out to people just to get it into their hands before it's wasted. Good opportunity to check in on the neighbors, I suppose.

I'm going to spend some time trying to cook up a few of Wrench's memories to share with others. I'm definitely going to submit a memory of Wrench and Grady, so anyone who knew his partner before he disappeared from town might be able to catch a glimpse of that if they'd like. Otherwise, I love this as a prompt for pushing CR forward. I'm not in any hurry to make it abundantly clear that Wrench is a former hitman, but if there's anything that folks might like to take a glimpse at from his past, let me know and I'll see what I can get written up.

Wrench has one pill left that he stole from Marjorie's house during one of her holiday parties. He and Margaret did a couple of experiments to try and figure out what the pills are made of, and their efforts yielded no helpful results. I'm tempted to allow that last pill to go in this event just to see if having it found might propt any more useful information from Norman when he discovers it.

I would be more than delighted to either backdate her arrival so the two can have a proper meeting, or just hash out the specifics so we can move forward into event things when the time comes. Wrench considers himself the Absolute Worst first person anyone could meet, because he doesn't have a clue what's going on and he hasn't tried as hard as others to find out. (Look, you might not be particularly motivated to bust out of town either if your dead-in-canon-former-partner suddenly came back to life within the city limits of Sweetwater. Shame that's done now.)
He would've done his best to explain to her that she needs to fit in and pretend like this is all typical and she's lived in town forever, then he would've promptly gathered a pillow and made for the downstairs couch to give her a wide berth.

1 paragraph summary of character/canon: In a world where superheroes are real and a valuable commodity, Homelander is the strongest one out there. Imagine Superman, but with crippling emotional baggage and a short fuse that burns down a lot more frequently than anyone would like. Raised in a lab and systematically tortured to be crafted into the ultimate American superhero (or Supe), Homelander thinks he’s far more intelligent and conniving than he actually is and has a dangerously inflated sense of self that’s only second to his pathological need to be loved. He simultaneously believes he’s a superior being that should be in control of all normal people and that he’s a weak, sad little man who needs to scorch all the lingering feelings of isolation and depression out of himself. Anyone who tries to take him out is met with extreme prejudice; anyone who acts like they care for him is met with smothering, misguided affection.

Possible non-event hooks: He's freshly depowered and hating it. Odds are he's forgetting to do things like eat regularly and stay hydrated because as a superhero, thinking about such things was beneath him.

Most Desired CR: I want all of it. Give this guy a reason to get out of his house and not marinate in his own unhappiness.

Anything else? For those who are canon familiar, let's be real: Homelander sucks. He's an absolutely vicious monster in his own world, and an analogy for certain individuals and movements with a taste for red baseball caps. He's also a flaming racist who supports eugenics, confinement camps for dissidents, and lasers everyone who gets in his way and a lot of other people who are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I'm not here to play those parts of his story. I'm here specifically because he can't make that meteoric rise to power and will never have his powers back. I'm here because I'm interested in John (Homelander's given name, which he almost never uses) and the type of person the character could have been with a different background and upbringing. I'm here to force the character to develop beyond being The Homelander and into simply being John.
This is a long way of saying I have no interest in playing a homicidal despot and the most racist thing I'm comfortable playing out is Homelander bitching about people not speaking English.

It could also be a memory that outs him as a former superhero, like a memory of flying or punching through a wall. Let's plot!
The day I turned seventeen: Homelander hasn't been here long enough to accumulate anything of interest in his house. He might have a cache of Superman comic books that he's been reading with great interest, but that's about it. That said, he is familiar with interrogations, and would be happy to talk to anyone who does get caught afterwards.

Favorite types of characters to write against: I love to play with all kinds of characters! I'm always really excited to see the various dynamics that can arise between different character types.
About you: Currently I work part-time retail doing overnight stocking at a grocery store. Previously I did customer service, stocking, and arrangements in the floral department of the same store. I play a lot of TTRPG and function mostly at cryptid hours (hence my wacky tagging times.) I also do art and used to do cosplay. 1 paragraph summary of character/canon: Kalmiya's campaign is set (mostly) at the Brightstone Institute, a college for budding adventurers set in a humorous magical world with an overarching plot of political intrigue and cosmic horror. Students at Brightstone are divided into cohorts who live together in the dorms and conduct missions together as adventurers. Kalmiya joined one of these cohorts partway through a semester as a mysterious and fun-loving warlock (a magic-user who made a pact with a godlike entity to receive abilities and power,) after being on the run from her former cult (which she was raised to be the leader of,) which she went a long time not disclosing to most of the party. Together, Kalmiya's cohort has taken down a variety of horrible fiends, incomprehensible eldritch creatures, and magical fascists. Kalmiya mostly copes with the horrors by staying silly, to varying degrees of success.

Possible non-event hooks: Kalmiya is an incredibly social and very lonely extrovert who will chat up anyone at almost any opportunity, so there's a lot of chance for conversation. But she's also not from Earth and is still a bit fish out of water about it, especially in regards to her physical condition; 1960s beauty and hygiene standards require a lot more grooming than she's used to doing and now she doesn't even have magic to make it easier, so she's dealing with things like dry skin, frizzy hair, and socially acceptable fashion trends for the first time in her life. She's also holding (and repressing) a lot of anger and anxiety about this situation, which is more obvious in quiet, tense moments when she thinks she isn't being watched by the townies. She can often be caught adjusting her clothes or tugging their hems down, like maybe she isn't used to showing so much skin. Also she has a rat and has definitely been down to the library to do research on how to care for non-magical rats.
What are they up to in Sweetwater? Nothing much yet, since she's new! Mostly been getting her bearings and figuring out how to play the conformity game by Sweetwater's particular rules while meditating in private so she doesn't fully flip her shit. She has especially been trying to sniff out other non-locals because she is desperate for companionship and commiseration; she'll likely be looking into finding a job soon in an effort to gain access to more places and people in town.
Most Desired CR: All of it! Being so new, she mainly just needs to connect with other non-locals, regardless of the nature of the connection. But I would love for her to make some friends (not hard, she's very friendly) and find someone she can at least tentatively trust to have her back in this situation (much harder, she is slow to trust.) Folks who are understanding of her strangeness and frustration at the situation would be very helpful to her at this point. And people who are willing & able to explain 60s American tech and history to her would be great!

Cruel cruel summer: Kalmiya, growing up in a desert town in a fantasy setting with limited climate control options, is actually pretty well-equipped for this situation! The humidity will be a bit of a new and unfun challenge, but otherwise she'll be happy to do what she can in helping people to keep cool and not get sick while the power is out. She will definitely be using it as an excuse to do fun silly things like play in pools/sprinklers, figure out how flashlights work, and shove ice down people's shirts (mostly her own) (unless she thinks someone else might think it's funny)
Living in a movie scene: The opposite of last prompt in that it is one of Kalmiya's worst nightmares. I haven't quite decided which of her memories I'd like to share yet, but there are a lot of options: showing her true, non-humanized appearance; glimpses of her upbringing as reluctant young leader of her former cult; adventures with her party members that show her former magical capabilities; and even nice ones like some of her happiest moments with her friends and partner. I am leaning towards memories that would hint at some of these things rather than making them super explicit, but it depends on what folks are interested in! I'm also very excited for her to see memories from other people. Kalmiya at baseline tries pretty hard to respect the privacy and secrets of people she has no beef with, so she will be feeling pretty complicated in mostly unpleasant ways about seeing personal stuff that was not meant for her eyes, and will likely want to talk it out with whoever she can.
The day I turned seventeen: Kalmiya keeps her one subversive possession so far (a dagger from home) concealed on her person at all times, so she's not likely to turn anything suspicious up at the house check unless frisked. She's also not likely to make a fuss about the voice to the police. However, if a housemate were to be caught with something subversive or try to pursue the issue of the girl's voice, she would absolutely back them up in whatever their efforts may be (covering for them, getting purposefully caught, finding a window to investigate the voice, etc.) She won't leave a troublemaker out to dry!

Cruel cruel summer: Arthur has lived in England and Massachussets, he is not equipped for the heat and he is going to sufferrrrrr. Since Arthur lives alone he doesn't have much of a choice in letting other people in to help him with his devices but he's not happy about it.

Arthur's been blind for the entirety of his canon, and I'd love to share those experiences regardless for people so they get a chance to see how fucking wild his canon is. His memories are going to be like, entirely black, except for flashes of impact when he receives an injury, such as being shot or stabbed or something.
